Yata-dera Temple is located 3.5 km west of the castle town of Koriyama.
Known as the “Hydrangea Temple,” it is especially famous for its beautiful hydrangeas that bloom spectacularly during the rainy season.

The history of Yata-dera Temple dates back 1,300 years. Emperor Tenmu, then known as Prince Oama, climbed Yata Mountain to pray for victory in the Jinshin War, 672. After becoming emperor, he ordered Monk Chitsuu to build the temple, which originally included seven halls and forty-eight sub-temples.
