During the Nara period, Onono Mayumi Takeyumi and his adopted son Nagamaro were hunting with Emperor Shomu when Nagamaro accidentally killed his father. The emperor, deeply saddened, ordered Gyoki to build a small hall to enshrine a statue of Eleven-faced Kannon to honor Takeyumi’s soul.

It is said that the face at the top of the Eleven-faced Kannon statue in this temple was carved from the grip of Emperor Shomu’s bow.

The main hall, a national treasure, was built in 1279 during the Kamakura period. However, due to a lack of funds following the Mongol invasions, it had a temporary roof for 60 years. The current main hall, featuring a Japanese cypress bark roof, dates from that time.

Although the temple suffered from domestic wars and the anti-Buddhist movements of the Meiji era, the main hall was restored in 1935.

The main hall is a national treasure.
It has an inscription written in ink that says, “Built in the 2nd year of Koan” (1279).
