Takakamo Shrine is the head shrine of all Kamo shrines nationwide and is one of Japan’s oldest shrines, established since the middle of the Yayoi period. It enshrines the guardian deity of the Kamo clan, a prestigious noble family of Yamato. From this location, the Kamo clan spread widely throughout the country, establishing shrines dedicated to their deities in many regions. The famous Kamigamo Shrine and Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto are part of this network, with Takakamo Shrine serving as their head shrine.
