Townscape

The Matsuyama area is a historic townscape that spreads west of Uda-Matsuyama Castle.
It originated as a castle town settlement built by the Akiyama clan during the Sengoku period (about 500 years ago).
In the Edo period, it flourished as a commercial town and remained a tenryo (directly governed by the shogunate) for many years.
In 2006, it was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government.

This is also a sake brewery. The slightly cooler climate of Ouda is said to be ideal for sake brewing.

Ouda is the true home of Yoshino kudzu. Although it has ‘Yoshino’ in its name, its true origin is in Ouda, not Yoshino.
