About Ryosenji Temple




Ryosen-ji Temple is located along the Tomio River in the western part of Nara City.
In the late 7th century, Ono no Tobito, whose father Ono no Imoko is well-known for serving as a Sui envoy, resigned from his position as the Minister of the Right and settled in this area.
He began cultivating medicinal herbs and offering herbal baths, marking the start of the temple.

Here is the map of the temple grounds, located next to the entrance information center. The red square marks the entrance.

  • Upon entering, you’ll find the rose garden on your right.
  • Proceed a little further, and you will find the Yakushi-yu (medicinal herb baths) on your left.
  • Continue further, and you’ll find the main hall and bell tower on your right.
  • The three-story pagoda will be on your left.
  • Continue straight ahead (to the upper left) to reach the Inner Sanctuary.

The Rose Garden

The garden features 200 varieties and 2,000 rose plants.

The best times to visit for viewing are:
・Early May to mid-June
・Mid-October to early November

The Yakushi-yu

During the Nara period, Emperor Shomu also bathed here while hunting birds.
The Yakushi-yu, cherished by many locals for over 1,300 years, was modernized in 1982.

It enshrines Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), Nikko Bosatsu (the Sunlight Buddhist deity), and Gekko Bosatsu (the Moonlight Buddhist deity), among others.

Standing 17 meters tall, this three-story pagoda features a roof covered with cypress bark, measuring 5.5 meters on each side.

During the Heian period, Kobo Daishi visited the temple and sensed the presence of a powerful dragon deity on Mount Tomiyama, located behind the temple.
This deity was enshrined in the Inner Sanctuary.
