

The temple, famous for its cosmos flowers, is located in Narazaka on the road leading to Kyoto.
It was founded during the Asuka period and flourished in the Heian period, attracting a thousand scholars.
Though it has faced destruction by fire and been rebuilt multiple times, it remains a popular destination for visitors in autumn.
The temple’s west gate, a national treasure, dates back to the Kamakura period.

The best time to view cosmos flowers at Hannyaji Temple is from late September to late October.
Access to Hannya-ji Temple is convenient.
By bus: You can take a bus from JR Nara Station via Kintetsu Nara Station, which takes approximately 16 minutes.

At the entrance of Hannyaji Temple, there is a notable stone called the “Kanman Stone.”


The Jusanju-sekihoto (Thirteen-Story Stone Pagoda) stands 14.2 meters tall and is one of Japan’s most iconic stone pagodas.

The Issaikyozo (Scripture Repository) is renowned for its connection to Prince Oto-no-miya.





The Hannyaji Temple’s Romon Gate, designated as a National Treasure, dates back to the Kamakura period.
It is the oldest existing two-story gate of its kind in Japan.
Although many of the temple’s buildings were destroyed by fire during conflicts, this gate survived.
