From JR Inari Station, you can easily access the main shrine hall of Fushimi Inari Taisha. If you plan to hike the “Mountain Pilgrimage” (Oyama Meguri) through the thousands of torii gates to the summit, it takes about 2 hours to complete the roughly 4 km circuit.

To get there from JR Nara Station, take the JR Kyoto-bound train to JR Inari Station. Keep in mind that the rapid train (Miyakoji Rapid) does not stop at JR Inari Station, except during the New Year period. You’ll need to transfer to a local train at JR Rokujizo Station before reaching JR Inari Station.

Fushimi Inari Shrine bustling with new year’s visitors

This was the scene around 9 a.m.

By the time I returned from walking around the mountain, the approach was already crowded with New Year’s worshippers.

From behind the main shrine hall, the thousands of torii gates continue.
