The lily of the valley at Mukobuchi is designated as a national natural monument due to its rarity as the southernmost natural habitat.
A long time ago, lilies of the valley bloomed in many places in Nara during colder climates.
However, as temperatures gradually warmed, the conditions became unsuitable for their growth, and now they can only thrive in slightly cooler highland areas.
Thus, natural lilies of the valley can only be seen in Mukobuchi in Muro and Hayama in Tsuge District.

Most of the lilies of the valley sold at garden centers are German lilies of the valley.
German lilies of the valley have flowers that are positioned higher than the leaves, making them more visible.
However, Japanese lilies of the valley bloom quietly hidden among the leaves, making their flowers less noticeable.
Japanese lilies of the valley have a more delicate appearance.
