Gojo Shinmachi was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2010.
The town was established as a castle town during the early Edo period by Matsukura Shigemasa, the feudal lord of the Gojo Domain. Although the Gojo Domain was abolished after Matsukura Shigemasa was transferred to the Shimabara Domain in Hizen, the area thrived under direct control of the shogunate with the establishment of the Gojo Magistrate’s Office.
In Nara Prefecture, three locations have been designated as Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings: Imai Town (Kashihara City), Uda Matsuyama (Uda City), and Gojo Shinmachi.

Machiya-kan

On the left is Machiya-kan.
It was formerly used as the Tsuji family residence.
Inside the building, many features remain that evoke life during the Edo period, including rooms built in traditional machiya style, a well, a hearth, and box stairs.

This building is also the birthplace of Atsutaro Kimura.
Atsutaro Kimura served in key positions during the postwar Yoshida Cabinet, including Minister of Justice, Commissioner of the Ministry of Justice, and Director General of the Security Agency.
The room shown in this photo is where he studied as a student.

Kuriyama Honke

Kuriyama Family Residence

It is the oldest building in Gojo Honmachi.
Built in Keicho 12 (1607), it is said to be the oldest privately owned house in Japan with a clearly known construction date.
