Shinyakushiji Temple is located south of Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
It was established in 747 by Empress Komyo, praying for Emperor Shomu’s recovery from illness.
The main hall (a National Treasure), which dates back to the temple’s founding, preserves the architectural style of the Nara era. The principal deity is the seated Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), revered for its power to cure illness. Surrounding this statue are twelve guardian deities, the “Twelve Divine Generals” (also National Treasures), who protect Yakushi Nyorai.
These statues are noted for their strength and expressiveness, celebrated as outstanding examples of early Japanese Buddhist sculpture.

The bell tower is located on the right as you enter the temple grounds through the gate.
Built around 800 years ago, the tower is distinctively coated with white plaster.
The temple bell (an Important Cultural Property) dates back to the Nara period.
